CEO dies during OSIM triathlon

TRAGEDY struck at the Osim Singapore International Triathlon yesterday.

Deutsche Telekom Asia CEO Calvin Lee Wee Sing, 42, who was taking part in a triathlon relay with two directors of the company, ran into trouble during the swimming segment.

Despite being pulled to shore by rescuers and given medical attention, attempts to revive the father of a 12-year-old girl failed. He later died at Changi General Hospital.

A 42-YEAR-OLD chief executive officer died yesterday after taking part in the Osim Singapore International Triathlon, the latest in a series of tragedies involving endurance events here.

Mr Calvin Lee Wee Sing, the CEO of Deutsche Telekom Asia, was pronounced dead at 2.35pm yesterday, about 90 minutes after he ran into trouble during the swim segment of the Mix/Open relay race - the last event of the day.

Mr Lee, who has an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and an honours degree in mechanical and production engineering from the National University of Singapore (NUS), had been with Deutsche Telekom for about 12 years.

Other deaths at triathlons and marathons

Ho Wai Piew, 40, suffered a heart attack during the swim leg of the New Balance Corporate Triathlon. It was the Hewlett-Packard production manager's first triathlon.

He had an existing coronary arterial problem, and the cause of death was certified as drowning, heart attack and advanced coronary arterial disease. The state coroner issued a verdict of misadventure.

After completing the Singapore Biathlon's 1.5km swim and just 600m from the finish line of the 10km run, Colonel Bernard Tan, 39, collapsed.


Young Australians rule at Osim triathlon

AUSTRALIA'S brightest young talents ruled the roost at the Osim Singapore International Triathlon yesterday, clinching their maiden victories in both the men and women's elite categories.

Joshua Amberger, 20, completed the men's Olympic distance event in 1hr 56 min 17sec, more than two minutes ahead of second-placed compatriot Jesse Featonby.

Another Australian, 18-year-old Ashleigh Gentle, came from behind to take the women's title with a time of 2:10:35. Her nearest rival was Hoi Long of Macau, who finished two minutes behind.
