Number of heroin abusers growing

HEROIN has reclaimed its place as the drug of choice among addicts here after a hiatus of six years, when it trailed party drugs and then Subutex.

In the first three months of this year, heroin addicts made up more than half - or 55 per cent - of the 386 abusers caught.

Last year, 859 heroin abusers were caught, making up nearly half the total number of abusers. In 2007, the 690 caught formed less than one in three of the total number of drug users arrested.
