SYDNEY: Australian domestic aviation routes could be opened up to international carriers, including Singapore Airlines, under reforms being proposed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra.

In a surprisingly robust assessment of what needs to be done to improve Australia's aviation industry, foreign affairs mandarins have urged the government to allow overseas airlines to fly domestic passengers between state capitals.

They say it would increase competition on some domestic routes and benefit consumers and businesses.
