I read with interest the report, "Stay-home holidays for Singaporeans" (my paper, Nov 24).
"Staycations" are part of a trend which will last for a long time, even after the economy recovers. This is a good opportunity to raise Singaporeans' awareness and appreciation of local hot spots, which will in turn help to stimulate the economy and save jobs.
Singapore offers many world-class attractions at affordable prices, and I see no reason why locals should not support and visit them.
A staycation also translates into a stress-free holiday, as one would not need to get accustomed to a new culture, language, food, a different climate and road conditions.
Travel time and costs can also be saved, meaning that one can enjoy a longer holiday with more opportunities to pamper oneself and indulge in a variety of food.
In addition, I would like to remind those who are going for a holiday, whether local or overseas, to take the necessary precautions in order to ensure the safety of family members, especially young children and the elderly, and the security of their homes and valuable items.
Those going on holiday should get neighbours to watch their homes, suspend their newspaper and magazine subscriptions, and check that all electrical appliances are disconnected before heading for their getaway.
While dealing with the current economic downturn and getting on with daily life, it is important that people learn how to destress and let their hair down.
They should learn to enjoy nature and the things around them, and re-energise themselves for the next day's challenges.
For those people who are unable to go on a holiday, whether local or overseas, I hope that they can take time off to go for a slow walk around the estate during their days off, take their children to the playground or library, go for a swim at the beach or a swimming complex, or have a leisurely picnic with their loved ones.
It is necessary and important for both adults and children to enjoy life, and the long year-end school holidays provide ample opportunity for the whole family to do so.
In short, holidays do not mean expensive overseas trips, but meaningful time enjoyed with your family, even in Singapore. Here's wishing everyone a great holiday!
