SINGAPORE, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Singapore's visitor arrivals in December 2008 fell 6.9 percent from a year earlier as the global economic downturn took a toll on the tourism sector, the Singapore Tourism Board said on Tuesday.

It marked the seventh consecutive month of decline, falling to 888,000 visitors.

Revenues from room bookings at gazetted hotels dropped 7.4 percent to S$141 million ($93.3 million) from a year earlier.

Visitor arrivals for all of 2008 fell 1.6 percent to 10.1 million. However, tourism receipts proved more resilient, rising 4.8 percent to S$14.8 billion ($9.8 billion), a new record, in 2008.

Hotel room revenues for 2008 also hit a record high of $S2.1 billion, an increase of 12.1 percent over 2007.

Singapore has been trying to move away from manufacturing into service industries such as finance and tourism to diversify its economy.
