Cheese with your greens

Sick of rocket, tired of romaine and can't stand the bitterness of radicchio?

Don't think you can use these as excuses not to eat a salad, especially since there are alternatives like mache (pictured).

Known also as lamb's lettuce, this tender salad vegetable makes a terrific addition to any bowl of greens. It grows in pretty clusters and has a mild, sweet taste.

Le Bon Marche in Tiong Bahru gets weekly shipments of it at $7.50 for a 150g box, with stocks arriving on Thursdays or Fridays.

While you're there, get some burrata (inset, $17 for 250g) too, shipped weekly from Puglia, Italy.

This fresh Italian cheese is a real indulgence. It is shaped like a bag tied at the top, hinting at riches inside. Well, the outside is made of stretchy mozarella and the inside oozes mozzarella curds and cream.

It goes beautifully with the mache and perhaps some good tomatoes sliced up. A sharpish salad dressing is called for, I think, because everything is so rich. But that should not stop you from dunking hunks of warm bread into the oozy cheese.

Le Bon Marche, 78 Guan Chuan Street, 01-41, tel: 6226-3269. Opening hours: 10am to 7.30pm (Monday to Saturday), closed on Sunday.
