Here's one restaurant that will appeal to those who have taken to an organic diet.
Vegetarian cafe Yes Foods & Beverages has been drawing patrons seeking wholesome fare at down-to-earth prices since it opened a few months ago in the Aljunied area. And it has built up a regular following among some of its customers.
It features dishes with organically-grown brown rice and vegetables grown organically or without chemicals.
One of Yes Foods' directors, Mr Tan Tong Eng, said that with many people falling ill, the eatery's vision is to offer healthy food using organic ingredients wherever feasible.
Its formula seems to be working well. According to Mr Tan, the response has been good so far. He said: 'Good health is what people want. We try to use as much organic (ingredients) as possible. We feel that vegetables grown with chemical pesticides are not good.'
Dishes at Yes Foods are prepared with less oil, sans MSG, and have a comforting home-cooked quality about them. The kitchen uses sea salt and sunflower oil.
The menu, while not an extensive one, has sufficient variety to keep regulars happy.
You won't spot any deep-fried items here. What you will find is an array of brown rice sets and noodle dishes, which form the bulk of the menu.
A soup is served with any main course. If you order a set meal, you will get a main course, as well as a salad and a dessert.
Prices are easy on your pocket. Most of the rice sets and noodle items will set you back by $5.50 per order as a main course and $8 as a set meal.
The eatery is crowded during weekends as I found out one recent Sunday when I dropped by for dinner. The bigger tables were mostly occupied by families with young children in tow.
I opted for the fragrant spices rice set which is among the favourites at the eatery. A generous portion of the whole grain, cooked with toon, a herb high in antioxidants, is accompanied by three side dishes. Other organic rice offerings include pineapple rice and fried rice.
For something lighter, there is organic brown rice congee at $4 a serving.
Noodles in almond sauce topped with raw vegetables are also popular, as are the 'pocket salads' listed under starters. Wholemeal pita bread is stuffed with an array of raw vegetables and sprouts, with some mock ham thrown in. A salad dressing using olive oil as its base enhances the taste of the dish.
Fans of raw veggies can also opt for another starter item - sushi roll. Most of the starters are priced at $4.
For a sweet ending to your meal, there is an oriental-style dessert, which changes daily. Examples include red dates and sweet potato soup, or green bean and millet soup.
Yes Foods also operates a retail outlet a few minutes' walk from the cafe, featuring organic or pesticide-free fresh produce and health food items. The shop is at 599, Geylang Road.
Yes Foods & Beverages is located at No. 57 Lorong 27 Geylang Road (near Aljunied MRT station)
Tel: 6741-1580. It is open from 11.30am to 3pm and 4.30pm to 9pm every day except Wednesdays.
