If reader Thomas Lim had been a little earlier that day, he may not have discovered a new eating place. The 31-year-old technician had planned to eat at a nasi lemak stall in Changi Village, but it was closed by the time he got there.
He said: "So I thought that I'd just look around the stretch of coffeeshops a stone's throw away." And that was when he came upon Stonegrill Express.
He wrote to The New Paper about his discovery. He is the first reader to be featured in this new column about new, undiscovered food joints.
Said Mr Lim: "I usually travel far and wide for a unique and budget-friendly food experience. I'm kind of like a closet food adventurer." Well now, he is out of the foodie closet.
Of the offerings at Stonegrill Express, Mr Lim said: "The meat and ingredients are undeniably fresh, as are the rest of the side dishes.
"The coleslaw is refreshingly sweet in a way that tickles your tastebuds without being overpowering." He added: "Basically, you order a set that includes a mashed potato and coleslaw on the side.
"When the order arrives, the main dish is placed on top of the sizzling hot stone."
While his one gripe is that "all orders come only with black pepper sauce", he finds the prices at Stonegrill Express reasonable.
He said: "At $10 to $14, it's a real steal, considering the generous portion of the meat, the freshness of the food and the fun of the grilling experience.
"However, I wouldn't rave about the service, since it's a simple stall and... you can expect fair but good treatment from the owner.
"I'd give the service a 6 out of 10. They did take the initiative and enquired about my experience with them." If you want to check it out for yourself, you'll need to pay attention.
Thomas said: "It was after three rounds of walking to and fro that I spotted it, due to its old signboard.
"The signboard misled me into thinking that it was the signboard of a nasi lemak stall!"
