The retro television plays cartoons all evening long. The food is served on flowery crockery right out of the 1970s. Every dish on the menu spells comfort.
Welcome to Monster Mash, a retro cool eatery in Holland Village that specialises in bangers and mash.
The restaurant is run by Terry Soe, 45 and his wife Joanne, 35, both British who started a similar restaurant in Edinburgh, Scotland, six years ago. With that eatery a success, and at the urging of friends, they and their two daughters uprooted themselves and set up shop here in late December.
Singapore wasn't an entirely random choice. Terry Soe, who is of Myanmarese and Scottish parentage, used to stop over here on the way to visit his father's relatives in Myanmar.
He says: 'We knew there was a healthy eating out culture here, and we felt there was a niche for something different.'
Monster Mash's sausages are terrific. All four I sampled were cooked perfectly. They are made for the restaurant currently but by the end of the month, they will be made in-house.
I'm on a mission to try every sausage in the house. It might take some doing, since they have three different 'sausages of the day' each day of the week. The two-sausage-with-mash combo ($19, right) is a good place to start.
If the Beef And Guinness one is on the menu, get that. This hearty sausage is very flavourful and the meat isn't too finely ground.
The cumin-scented Tandoori Lamb sausage is also good and gets a pleasing tang from yogurt added to the mince.
I liked the chunky Pork, Apple, Rosemary And Sage sausage too, as the herbs really bring out the flavour of the pork. Another good pork option is the Monster Sausage, not quite as herby or chunky, but still full of flavour.
Several versions of mashed potato provide a soft bed for the sausages. They scream homemade, being comfortingly lumpy. They are also undersalted, but it's nothing a couple of shakes from the salt shaker can't fix.
The plain Monster Mash is made with just milk and butter and is pure comfort. Coriander And Chilli is a little more exotic and manages not to taste like ang mo bergedel.
Save some room for dessert. The Sticky Toffee Pudding ($7) is soft, fluffy and not too sweet, and the Bread And Butter Pudding ($7) comes with a deliciously crisp top sprinkled with sugar. You also get a jug of Bird's custard, its milky sweetness tasting so much of childhood.
