A few nights ago, I told my family members I was going to write about a laid-back little hangout they had discovered in Bukit Timah.
Immediately, there were cries of 'Don't write!'
Well, I am writing about it but do you think, dear reader, you could try not to jam-pack the place and hijack the party? Please?
Along Bukit Timah Road, there is a bar called Bar Bar Black Sheep, where white-collar types unwind after work.
They stroll in with a few friends or colleagues, to drink or just drink in the convivial mood. While they are at it, they may have a burger from Smok'inn Frogz Kitchen, a stall that shares the kopitiam-like shop space with the bar.
And these are some delicious burgers.
The beef burger ($12) is a tower of crispy bun, cheese, juicy ground beef patty and juicier caramelised onions, rivalling posh burgers from restaurants.
The chicken burger ($12), which is not as tall, comes with chunks of smoky grilled chicken that are complemented by a creamy, spicy and sweet sauce.
Then there is the fish and chips ($12). The fish is luscious, coated in a batter that though thick, doesn't become sodden.
The dish, like the burgers, comes with carefully fried chips that are oil-free outside and rich inside. These fries are so good that when I took some home as leftovers, my mother was full of praise for them.
Why would there be leftovers, you ask? Because the serving of chips with the fish is huge and can feed a small family, or a group of dieting girls - or guys.
Also on the menu are mains including beef linguini ($10), a big plateful of al dente pasta, piquant and spicy.
Wash it all down with beer, if you will, as you sit back and while away an evening.
