MALACCA - The reason for three decades of connection between Sungai Rambai folks here and Ledang in Johor has collapsed.

A 31-year-old bridge, popularly know as Jambatan Kasih (Love Bridge) suddenly collapsed after a downpour on Friday.

The bridge connects Kampung Penghulu Tengah here and Kampung Telok Rimba in Ledang. It cuts travel time between the border of the two states by almost 45 minutes compared to travelling on the trunk road.

Sungai Rambai assemblyman Datuk Hasan Ab Rahman estimated that about 5,000 people crossed the bridge daily.

"We believe the swollen river was caused by the heavy downpour resulting in the bridge to be swept away by strong undercurrents.

"Fortunately, there was no one crossing the bridge when the incident happened at about 3pm on Friday," he said yesterday.

He added that the bridge would be rebuilt as soon as possible.

Villager Sabidah Md Rangga, 51, remembered the bridge, built in 1986, even during her younger days.

"It was used to travel to Tangkak and to schools in Johor," she said.
