“Mighty” May Ooi masterfully illustrated her warrior’s mettle on Friday, 18 August. The former Singaporean Olympic swimmer stepped into the cage at 41-years-old, made her ONE Championship debut in front of her largest audience, and defeated strawweight contender Ann “Athena” Osman at ONE: QUEST FOR GREATNESS.

The pace was set quickly for this clash of national pride, as the Malaysia-Singapore rivalry was renewed once again. As soon as the bell rang to begin the bout, Osman landed a massive punch that dropped Ooi almost immediately.

Showing true composure, the Olympian was able to return to her feet and regain her wits. Osman continued to keep the pressure on, as she smothered Ooi up against the cage. In a split second, “Mighty” May was able to sweep the Malaysian heroine to the canvas, but it was only a matter of time before the two would return to their feet.

With just under two minutes remaining in the opening frame, Ooi was able to bring the match back to the canvas, and quickly sank in a very tight, belly down rear-naked choke on Osman. She then forced “Athena” to tap out in front of her hometown crowd at the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The end came at just 3:27 of the first round, as Ooi locked in her first victory with ONE Championship. The win snaps a two-bout losing skid, and elevates her record to 3-2. As for Osman, she falls to 5-4, and leaves wondering what went wrong.
