TAIPEI - At least one person is dead and 15 others injured after an explosion occurred at a curry restaurant in Taichung.

Taiwanese media reports said the explosion happened at lunchtime at Sin Ji Bridge Curry Restaurant on Tuesday (July 18) in the Fengjia business district. One victim was a pregnant woman.

According to The China Post, the explosions are believed to have been caused by a spark igniting a leaking gas cylinder, resulting in a fire that destroyed three buildings, which had illegal rooftop apartments constructed on top.

A woman's body was found on the second floor of the building. Of the 15 injured, six are students from the nearby Fengjia University.

Reports state that initial estimated damages stood at NT$1.5 million (S$67,500).
