A local youth died shortly after diving in a swimming pool at the army camp of the Third Battalion of the Royal Brunei Land Force in Lumut, yesterday afternoon.
The Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) said in a statement that witnesses saw the 19-year-old male diving from a springboard at a "single-floor height" at the swimming pool around 4.30pm.
After entering the 15ft-deep water, the diver did not emerge and remained at the base of the swimming pool.
Physical training instructors present attempted a rescue, pulling the youth out of the water. Personnel from the Medical Reception Service then performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the victim but were unable to revive him.
Due to lack of a pulse, the victim was then transported to Suri Seri Begawan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5.20pm.
A report was lodged at the Sungai Liang Police Station at 6.20pm.
The body of the deceased has been retrieved by his family for burial.
No post-mortem was conducted as police ruled out foul play.
