4 fined for misappropriation of government property in Brunei

FOUR men who were involved in misappropriating $10,000 (S$10,000) worth of government property were imposed a fine yesterday for committing the offence.

During the proceedings yesterday, the Magistrates' Court imposed a $2,000 fine on defendant Pg Harun Pg Hj Damit, 61, for his role in misappropriating the goods, while co-accused Hj Ghazali Hj Metussin, 53, Ali Karim, 42, and Jeffri Omar, 43, were each imposed a $1,500 fine.

The men were ordered to pay the fines within the three-month grace period. The court document submitted by deputy public prosecutor Pg Norsuzanawati Pg Hj Abas states on April 16, 2008, a police report was filed when several items were missing from the Tasek Lama storeroom at the Department of Water Services.

The items that were stored in the room were various parts related to water works maintenance and repairs, which were properties belonging to the Brunei government.

The following investigation led to defendant Pg Harun, a Store Keeper Grade II responsible for the storeroom at Tasek Lama, admitting to have dishonestly misappropriated various items when he took it from the store and later selling them between December 2007 and March 2008.

On several occasions Pg Harun would go together with the co-accused, who were also his work colleagues, to sell off the items and later share the sales.

The police were able to recover several of the items, namely, 157 units of stainless steel pipes of various sizes; 49 units of Check Valves of various sizes; 58 units of Dark Tiles Iron; two units of Pili Bomba; 76 units of Elbow CXMI of various sizes; 19 units of Socket CXFI; 26 units of Tee CXCXC; 25 units of CXMI Coupler and 25 units of CXMI Couple. The total recovered items were valued at $10,000.
