6.3-magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan

TAIPEI - A strong earthquake struck Taiwan Thursday, shaking buildings in the capital Taipei and causing tremors across the island, an AFP correspondent reported.

The country's Seismology Centre said the tremor, which struck shortly after 8pm local time (1200GMT), was measured at 6.3 magnitude with its epicentre in the island's eastern Hualien county.
