TAIPEI - Almost 40 dogs found abandoned in a public cemetery in Miaoli County on Friday have all found new owners, according to a neighborhood watch leader who arranged the adoptions.
Chen Ching-jong said he and his daughter spent hours over the last two days arranging the adoptions after taking the abandoned dogs home from a cemetery in Tongxiao township.
Some of the dogs were already dead when found, and some others were injured or maimed, said Chen, who leads a neighborhood watch team in Tongxiao.
He said he was worried that no one would want to adopt nine of the obviously injured or unhealthy animals, but it turned out that some dog lovers specifically asked for them and promised "special care" for them.
Chen said the dogs were probably abandoned by breeders who thought they were no longer useful for breeding purposes
Having been alerted by police on Friday about the dogs, Chen and about 20 other members of his neighborhood watch team arrived at the cemetery to catch the animals.
He decided to take them home and posted adoption notices on the Internet. Chen said he received probably 1,000 calls inquiring about the animals. The new owners come from various parts of Taiwan, including Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Tainan and Yilan.
