All chickens sold in Brunei supermarkets halal: Govt

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - The Syariah Affairs Department yesterday advised the public not to disseminate information of unknown origin.

The Halal Food Control Section, in a statement on its Facebook page, announced that information disseminated through social media 'WhatsApp' on the sale of dubious chicken meat at two department stores in the country is not true.

"All chicken meats sold at the supermarkets in Brunei Darussalam are supplied by local abattoirs accredited by the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB)," the statement read.

"Every report on the results of investigations and inspections made by the Halal Food Control Unit are kept confidential."

The section said it will continue to monitor local abattoir centres that are accredited and accorded halal certificates by MUIB and conduct necessary investigations with the cooperation of related government agencies.

According to the circulated message, there was suspicion that chicken meat sold at two supermarkets was not halal since it was brought in from a neighbouring country without the halal labelling.
