Batam Police urged to solve murder cases

The Batam City Police have been urged to solve five murder cases that occurred in the past two weeks in Batam, to restore calm to the area.

Batam city councillor Yudi Kurnain said the recent murder cases had caused concern among residents and businesspeople.

"As a tourist destination and business city, safety is the most important thing. The recent incidents show Batam is no longer a safe place because one of the victims included a foreigner," Yudi told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

On May 5, Suhaima was found dead after being stabbed on a road in Barelang, while on May 8, Vietnamese national Pham Thi Thanh Hoa was found covered in blood at the side of a road.

Two days later, a high school student who was also a fashion model, was stabbed to death. The police arrested a suspect in this case.

On May 16, a 17-year-old woman was stabbed to death at a camping site in Kabil, while another resident Laode Umar was allegedly killed in his room.

"We're still thoroughly investigating the cases. We have found clues in several cases. Give us some time to solve them all," said Batam City Police general crime division head Ponco Indryo.
