Bengal to open schools in jails

Children of convicts will soon receive an education on jail premises, as the West Bengal Correctional Department will be opening schools in jails from May 12.

The Alipore Correctional Home, where 25 six-year-olds are staying with their mothers, will be the first to have a nursery, a school and a library.

Currently, children of women prisoners between the ages of one and six are allowed to stay with their mothers, after which they either stay with their fathers or attend schools-cum-homes run by the government and NGOs.
