Bikini-opera in Fujian an insult to traditional art: Chinese netizens

FUJIAN, China - A bikini show has aroused heated debate online after photos of models wearing makeup and accessories typically used in the traditional Chinese Min Opera (or Fujian Opera) went public on Sina Weibo, a popular social networking site in China.

According to China Daily, the combination of bikini and the traditional Chinese elements became target of attack. Many Internet users slammed it as neither fish nor fowl and said it showed disrespect for the traditional art.

Shanghaiist.com reported that the show claimed it was for the opening ceremony of a business event in China.

Staff at the show claimed that a business client had wanted to mix modern and conventional elements together in the show and did not intend to hurt those who are passionate about traditional opera and culture.
