A 10-year-old boy from a village in Guangxi, China was made to kneel, thrown in a pig cage, and finally dunked in a cold lake as punishment for stealing over 20,000 yuan (S$4,400).
According to NetEase, the child had broken into the house of the local butcher by climbing a wall and entering through the second-storey window on Mar 2.
A neighbour who witnessed the break-in didn't raise the alarm at first, thinking that he could just be the mischievous child of a relative visiting for Spring Festival.
Upon discovering the crime, however, the whole village flew into a rage and decided to mete out some vigilante justice, reported Shanghaiist.
The boy was first made to kneel on the ground, before he was thrown into a small pig's cage on his knees while holding some of the notes he stole.
However, the villagers were still unsatisfied, and the boy was taken to a nearby lake, where he was made to remove his clothes and stand in the icy water of less than 10 degrees Celcius. Only when the boy started crying out in pain did the villagers relent and allow him back on shore, reported NetEase.
Police are currently conducting an investigation into both the robbery and the cruel punishment of the child, but as of yet his motivation for stealing the money is currently unknown.
