Brawl at Indonesian Army housing complex claims life

INDONESIA - A teenager, identified only as MS, died from a gunshot wound during a brawl at the Army's Engineering Construction Regiment (Menzikon TNI AD) housing complex in Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta, in the small hours of Monday.

"The brawl started after some 20 young men sitting by the roadside of the housing complex verbally harassed three women who were passing the area with male friends, identified only as V and D, who were escorting a friend home," city police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said.

Despite the women ignoring them, the gang set upon V and D until a soldier on security detail in the housing complex broke it up.

Shortly afterward, dozens of friends of V and D from neighbouring Cipayung and Ciracas arrived seeking retaliation. However, residents of the housing complex confronted the group.

A sentry is believed to have opened fire leaving MS, 16, dead and injuring MR, 19, who was hit in the leg.

"Our officers are still conducting an investigation to determine who fired the bullets that killed MS and wounded MR," Rikwanto said, adding that no arrests had been made.
