A staff member in a civil affairs bureau in Gao county, Yibin city of Sichuan province mistakenly issued a divorce certificate when asked for a marriage certificate, leading to a series of incidents worthy of a drama serial.
A woman asked the bureau to reissue a marriage certificate last February so that she could file for a divorce with her husband who was in jail. The staff member mistakenly printed the couple's information on a divorce certificate and the woman didn't correct him before she left.
The woman's husband didn't agree to a divorce, but when he was released in June, he found his wife was married to someone else. The man then filed a lawsuit against his wife for bigamy.
The woman married another man just ten days after she got the "divorce certificate." Though she was suspected of being already married when they registered at the bureau, the "divorce certificate" helped her clear the bureaucrat's suspicions.
The case is now under mediation and the staff member involved in the issue of the wrong certificate has been suspended from his post.
