A labourer from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, who killed his eight-month-old daughter by throwing her out of the window of a moving train during a fight with his wife, was sentenced to life by a Tirunelveli court on Wednesday.
Murugan, 38, is married to Poomari, 28, and were blessed with eight-month-old Mariselvi as well as an elder child. Last year, the man visited his sister, who lived in Nagercoil, to get some money from her for the Deepavali festival as he was unemployed, reported Makkal Osai.
They were on their way home to Tirunelveli by train on Oct 22 last year when the incident took place.
Murugan's sister had given a set of new clothes only for him and had ignored his wife and child. Poomari was upset by this and began to argue with her husband.
In a fit of anger, Murugan grabbed his child from his wife and threw her out of the train's window. However, the following day, when Murugan's mother demanded to know what had happened to her granddaughter, they broke down and confessed.
Family members, including Poomari, rushed to the spot where he had hurled the child and found her body on the banks of the Tamirabarini River.
Passers-by informed the police, who rushed to the area.
