HCM CITY (VNS) - Fire destroyed eight homes and damaged two others located in a small alley on Ben Van Don Street in Ward 1 of HCM City's District 4 this morning.

Police said the fire broke out at 11:15am in a closed house owned by Nguyen Thi Anh Nguyet in the alley at 360 Ben Van Don Street, just behind the office of the People's Committee of District 4's Ward 1.

No human loss was reported in the fire that was extinguished half an hour later. Two firemen suffered minor injuries, according to Nguyen Thi Hoang Trang, chairwoman of Ward 1 People's Committee.

The fire frightened people living in neighbouring residential areas. Hundreds of residents from nearby apartment block Khanh Hoi No 3 had to rush to escape the smoke from the fire.

More than 150 firemen from Districts 1, 4 and 8 were sent to the site. They found it difficult to put the blaze under control as Nguyet's house was in a small alley and contained many flammable materials.

Ward 1 chairwoman Trang said the eight burnt houses housed 51 residents.

District 4 authorities have provided support of VND5 million to each family whose homes were destroyed, while two households whose homes had slight damage received VND2 million each.

Trang said the office of Ward 1 People's Committee would be used to provide temporary shelter for the fire victims.

Further support will be given to the victims.

Police are continuing their investigation of the fire.
