An elderly woman was fined 200 yuan (S$30) and jailed for seven days by a Guangzhou city court after she was found guilty of causing a public disturbance on a bus.
The woman, identified as Madam Xin Yuzhen, 70, was videoed beating a bus driver with her metal walking cane on June 27.
According to Chinese reports online, Madam Xin had boarded the wrong bus and asked the driver to be let off. The bus driver told her to alight at the next bus station instead.
Unhappy with the explanation, the elderly woman started to argue with him and hit the bus doors repeatedly with her walking cane.
The driver tried to calm her down by saying he could have acceded to her request if she had asked nicely.
Madam Xin started to get more agitated and continued banging her cane on the doors. The driver motioned her to stop and warned her that she has to pay if the doors were damaged.
They both continued arguing until the male driver dared her to hit him instead. She started to whack his arm multiple times.
The argument went on for around 10 minutes even though other passengers intervened verbally and tried to make her stop.
Before alighting, Madam Xin was seen throwing a rubbish bin at the driver.
After she left, the bus driver slumped in his seat and started to sob. A female passenger was seen at the end of the video trying to comfort him.
According to news site Guancha.CN, the video was hotly debated as netizens tried the place the fault on both Madam Xin and the bus driver.
Many commented that the incident was a simple issue that got out of hand. More consideration and understanding would have averted the beating, said netizen Zou Yiyun.
