Ex-welfare officer slams those who exposed MyKad girl

PETALING JAYA - A former welfare officer has hit out at those instrumental in driving a 12-year-old Perak girl into drinking bleach over a misunderstanding involving her MyKad application.

Vijaya Kumari Pillai hit out at those who exposed a child in such a manner.

"This could stigmatise her.

"This is against the Child Protection Act," she said.

On Saturday, the girl reportedly swallowed about 10ml of bleach at her home after her schoolmates teased her following the rejection of her MyKad application two months ago.

This happened three days after DAP's Buntong assemblyman A. Sivasubramaniam called for a press conference to highlight her MyKad application issue.

The matter has since been resolved as the National Registration Department (NRD) had verified the mother-daughter relationship after initially doubting it because of their apparently different ethnic features.

NRD director-general Datuk Jariah Mohd Said said the matter would have been resolved last Wednesday had the girl's mother kept to her appointment with Perak NRD, because they had by then verified their biological ties.
