Firefighters catch women with bare hands as they fall from burning building

Two firefighters have been hailed as heroes after catching falling residents with their bare hands.

A fire broke out in a residential building in Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province on Saturday (March 25), prompting a desperate mother-daughter pair to climb out of their window.

The women were holding on to the window ledge on their sixth-floor unit when fatigue kicked in.

Fortunately, firefighters had broken into the fifth-floor unit in time to catch the mother as she fell.

"The situation at that time was urgent, and the impact of her fall was quite huge. But I just attempted to catch her, and pulled her into the building with the help of my partners," said Jiang Tiancai, one of the firefighters.

Shortly after, the daughter lost her grip and was quickly hauled to safety by another firefighter.

"The girl stood there for a very long time, and couldn't hold on anymore. So I asked the policeman behind me to grab me. After the hook was linked to her, I tightly held her leg. As she was falling down, I pulled her into the building," said firefighter Wei Tingbiao.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
