Over the past few years, the Lion City has emerged as Asia’s foremost hub for mixed martial arts, and is today home to some of the most talented martial artists in the world.

What’s more, several athletes are proudly flying the Singapore flag as they battle for both personal and national glory on the world stage. Here are five such proud Singaporeans in active competition today.

Angela Lee

She is the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion, and the youngest world champion in mixed martial arts history. Evolve MMA’s “Unstoppable” Angela Lee has emerged as arguably Asia’s most recognizable mixed martial arts athlete in recent times, regardless of gender.

The undefeated 20-year old has figured in some of the most memorable contests in the sport, fighting her way to a pristine 8-0 record, including two title defenses and seven spectacular finishes.

She’s even headlined two shows at a packed Singapore Indoor Stadium, with Singapore’s sole Olympic Gold Medalist and fellow national hero Joseph Schooling lending his support.

Her thrilling victories inside the cage have earned her international acclaim, and today, Lee enjoys success both in and out of the cage as an inspiration to women of all ages in Asia.

Christian Lee

Angela’s younger brother, Christian Lee, is also a top ONE Championship talent, competing in a stacked featherweight division. The Lees are a family of martial artists, with Singaporean father Ken and Korean mother Jewelz both highly-decorated black belts in multiple disciplines. So it comes as absolutely no surprise that Christian would follow suit.

Nicknamed “The Warrior”, the 18-year-old Lee sports a stellar 6-1 record, with all six of his victories coming by first-round finish. His fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping style has led to two crafty submission victories and four emphatic knockouts.

Christian has long made it known that his end-goal in his career is to become known as one of the greatest to ever step inside the cage. He is young, talented, extremely determined, and well on his way to achieving greatness.

At 18, Christian has already posted wins over a handful of dangerous foes from all across Asia, but he is still learning and improving with every single fight.

Amir Khan

A former Muay Thai champion, 22-year-old Amir Khan is a top prospect in ONE Championship’s deep lightweight division. Fighting out of Evolve MMA, Khan has amassed a solid 7-2 record over the course of his three-year professional career thus far.

One of Khan’s greatest assets is his incredible heart and tenacity whenever he steps inside the cage. Diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, Khan continues to overcome his ailment, and competes at a high-level in his sport of choice thanks to his martial arts training.

Khan has also been a part of several exciting battles inside the ONE Championship cage, resulting in all seven of his victories coming by stoppage, including a whopping six knockout wins. His most incredible display of heart came against Filipino veteran Vaughn Donayre in Singapore, who caught Khan in a deep kimura armlock mid-fight.

While most fighters would have succumbed to the pressure, Khan dug deep, refused to tap in front of his fellow countrymen, and won by third-round submission.

Tiffany Teo

Undefeated at 6-0, Tiffany “The Soul Crusher” Teo has impressed so far in her time on the global stage of MMA.

She joined ONE Championship in November of 2016, debuting against Egypt’s Walaa Abbas, in a bout she won via second-round rear naked choke. Since then, Teo has seen her star continue to rise with each victory.

Her most impressive win yet came against American Rebecca Heintzman-Rozewski at the Singapore Indoor Stadium this past May, when Teo took home a thorough unanimous decision after dominating her foe for three whole rounds.

Furthermore, Teo has shown tremendous improvement with each outing, and continues to build a solid following due to her fan-friendly style.

Benedict Ang

21-year-old Benedict Ang is not your ordinary Singaporean male. Although known for his colourful hairstyles in the cage, Ang is one of the most talented young lions to come out of the country.

Competing in ONE Championship’s featherweight division, Ang has put together a 3-1 record to start off his career, with two of his three victories coming by way of knockout. Ang’s only loss came against a top prospect from Pakistan, Ahmed Mujtaba, who outscored Ang last November to win by decision.

Despite the setback, Ang is young and talented enough to rebound from the loss, and has already defeated a handful of wily veterans early in his career, such as the Philippines’ Jimmy Yabo and Indonesia’s Yohan Mulia Legowo.

Although Ang will soon be unable to focus full-time on his professional career due to National Service, he does it proudly, and will undoubtedly emerge as a better martial artist at the end of it.
