GROs used as lures by illegal gambling joints

KUALA LUMPUR - Illegal gambling joints are using Guest Relation Officers to lure more customers.

Detected in premises in the Klang Valley, the cops discovered that the girls would "sit" with the gamblers throughout their gambling session, provided the girls were given tips or even ladies' drinks.

Federal Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice Division (D7) principal assistant director Senior Asst Comm Roslee Chik said some girls would even keep the gamblers' company for up to 12 hours for the right price.

"Just like GROs, the women were paid in tips or ladies drinks...each drink would cost up to RM30 or RM40.

"The number of drinks bought depends on the agreement between the girls and the customers," he told a press conference in Bukit Aman yesterday.

However, SAC Roslee ruled out the possibility that the girls would also give "extra service" to the gamblers.

He warned the public against being involved in gambling as the games were already rigged.

"It has been programmed to enable the "house" (syndicates) to win 90 per cent of the time while the gamblers were only given 10 per cent odds of winning.

"It will not benefit anyone except enriching the gambling syndicates," he said.

He explained that Bukit Aman have been actively monitoring and raiding illegal gambling joints nationwide resulting in 4,634 people arrested between Jan and May this year with RM910,058 worth of computers and other equipment seized.

"We arrested 4,549 people and seized RM1.3mil of assets during the same period last year.

"We will never give up until all illegal gambling centres are out of business," he said.
