HA TINH - Ha Tinh Province's People's Committee Chairman Le Dinh Son has asked Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung for VND80 billion (S$4.8 million) in aid to help the locality cope with drought.

Son said the prolonged hot weather in the central province this year due to climate change has led to a sharp fall in the water levels of local reservoirs, streams and rivers. Some small reservoirs have even run out of water.

There is a shortage of irrigation water for more than 1,000ha of the summer-autumn crop. Downgraded irrigation works also partly caused difficulties in providing irrigation water, he said.

Residents living in Huong Son and Huong Khe districts are suffering from the shortage of water for daily use.

The province has mobilised more than VND130 billion to cope with drought so far this year.
