India politician dies after being hugged by 'human torch'

A politician, who was hugged by a "human torch" during an election debate on TV, died after sustaining burns on his body, Makkal Osai reported.

Kamruzzama Fauji, who was a leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, had suffered 75 per cent burns on his body when an audience member doused himself in petrol and grabbed him.

Both men were engulfed in flames in front of the horrified crowd. The debate was being recorded in a park in Sultanpur, about 160km from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

Fauji's attacker, who had 95 per cent burns, died soon after the incident.
