The Izumo, the largest-ever Maritime Self-Defence Force vessel, was displayed to the public Saturday at the MSDF's Yokosuka Naval Base in Kanagawa Prefecture.

The helicopter carrier-type vessel is outfitted with a deck that can accommodate the simultaneous takeoff and landing of up to five helicopters. The Izumo is 248 meters long and 38 meters wide at its widest point.

From a lottery pool of more than 40,000 applicants, about 9,000 people were invited to tour the ship. Winners were allotted time slots during which they could board.

Visitors were allowed to walk on the giant flight deck and rode in an aircraft elevator designed to transport helicopters between the deck and the hangar.

A 40-year-old company employee from Kohoku Ward, Yokohama, toured the ship with three family members. "This is so spacious and clean," he said. "I hope [the Izumo] contributes to disaster relief and other good causes."
