Defence Minister Akinori Eto and his Thai counterpart Prawit Wongsuwan have agreed that the two countries will cooperate over defence equipment.
At a meeting held in Tokyo on Thursday, Eto agreed to a proposal from Prawit that Japan and Thailand start working-level talks on the matter.
Prawit told Eto that his Southeast Asian country has great interest in Japanese defence equipment.
Prawit also said Thailand's ruling military junta is promoting a shift to a civil government. Eto expressed hopes for an early return to civilian rule.
