Japan's 'Doraemon' movie sets record in China

BEIJING - Animated movie "Stand by Me Doraemon" featuring the eponymous robot cat from the future proved to be a huge hit in China during its opening weekend.

The film grossed 85 million yuan (S$10.2 million) Saturday and 88 million yuan Sunday, according to a Chinese box office tracker.

It was the first Japanese movie to be released in China since the 2012 dispute over the Senkaku Islands.
