Jokowi calls on police, military to avoid conflict

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has called on 793 new graduates of the Indonesian Military Academy (Akmil), Indonesian Navy Academy (AAL), Indonesian Air Force (AAU) and the National Police Academy (Akpol) to strengthen a familial atmosphere and avoid conflicts triggered by factional egoism deeply rooted in the two institutions.

"Don't get involved in conflicts triggered by factional egoism. Please build good communication. Strengthen a sense of togetherness and familial atmosphere between the Indonesian Military and the National Police," said Jokowi after he inaugurated the young Indonesian Army, Navy, Air Force and police officers at Bhayangkara Square in the Akpol complex in Semarang, Central Java, on Thursday.

The newly graduated officers comprise of 215 Akmil cadets, 89 AAU cadets, 100 AAL cadets and 389 Akpol cadets.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Indonesian Military commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo and National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti, as well as families of the graduates.

As part of the ceremony, President Jokowi awarded the Adhi Makayasa medal to the four top graduates: Second Lt. Angger Panduyuda from Akmil, Second Lt. Dito Sigit Kuncoro from AAU, Second Lt. Adyksa Yudistira from AAL and Second Insp. Fauzi Pratama from Akpol.

In his speech, Jokowi asked the new graduates to increase their professionalism so that they could become great and trustworthy leaders who were loved by all people.

"As leaders, all of these officers must stand on the front lines in providing motivation and a good example to the people. You are needed to answer these challenges in your heavy responsibilities. Moreover, in the current reform era, people are very open and critical. To face such a situation, a young leader must be able to bring about change. We must listen to critical voices to improve the situations that we are given," said Jokowi.

He further said Indonesian people had very high expectations, and that the media had a powerful influence. "All officers must be able to immediately adjust to situations. They must be responsive and able to respond to the demands of society," he went on.

"I believe that all of these officers are the top sons and daughters prepared by TNI's and Polri's education institutions. Please grow in your mind the spirit of change. You have to stand close to your people. You have to dare to make sacrifices for your people, nation and country," said Jokowi.

After the inauguration ceremony, the audience was entertained by a musical and dance performance presented by Akpol cadets.
