AN ARMY colonel, who was named as one of the gallantry medal awardees on the eve of Republic Day, was killed in a fierce gun battle with militants in Kashmir on Jan 27.

Colonel M.N. Rai, from Varanasi, was killed when he and members of the Jammu and Kashmir police were engaged in a gunfight with militants holed up in a house.

Col Rai, who was commanding officer of 42 Rashtriya Rifles, was awarded the Yudh Seva medal for bravery while eliminating a group of militants in the same area last year.
