Kolkata gets solar street lights

Targeting a zero-carbon footprint, as many as 50 battery-less, carbon-neutral solar street lights have been set up in Deshapriya Park by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

Estimated at Rs40 lakhs, the project is expected to bring down electricity bills for the city authorities.

Each of these lights are powered by solar energy and have a 180-watt LED-based panel that is equivalent to 400 watts of traditional electricity street lights.

Electricity will be generated throughout the day by the solar panels, and used by the lights at night.
