A young man from Henan province in China had to pay an 80,000 yuan (S$16,625) dowry, buy a car and put a downpayment for a house before he could marry his girlfriend.

In all, he had to spend about 500,000 yuan which is about S$103,900, reported China Press.

Xiao Yang, 27, said his girlfriend's family wanted the dowry and a car worth more than 100,000 yuan for the woman to drive around in.

The other requests included a new house for the woman in the city for which Xiao paid hundreds of thousands of yuan as downpayment.

He had to borrow from friends and relatives so that he could get hitched in the first month of the new lunar year, which starts on Jan 28.

Xiao works in the private sector after graduating from a university in 2012 and dated the woman since last year.
