Marine student assaulted, forced to eat chilies

Daniel Roberto, a student at the state-run Indonesian Merchant Marine Academy (STIP) in Marunda, Cilincing, North Jakarta, has filed a report against another student, 22-year-old Erwin Susanto, for allegedly assaulting and forcing him to consume chilies.

Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Martinus Sitompul said on Wednesday that the report was filed on Wednesday night.

"The incident occurred at 7:30 a.m. on Monday. The victim claimed that he was assaulted by a senior student," he said, as quoted by kompas.com.

Martinus said Erwin allegedly beat Daniel with his bare hands and a hammer. He also forced Daniel to eat bird's eye chilies.

"Daniel experienced asphyxiation, nausea, headaches and flank pain," he said.

He said Daniel had been taken to Pelabuhan Hospital in North Jakarta for treatment. "The police are still investigating the case," he said.

In October last year, three students from STIP were sentenced to four years in prison for beating a fellow student to death.
