JAKARTA - The chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Megawati Soekarnoputri, has announced her readiness to lead the party for another five years until 2020.
According to PDI-P deputy secretary-general Ahmad Basarah, Megawati agreed to continue to lead the party despite being surprised at the request to do so, which was voiced by all party regional heads via president-elect Joko "Jokowi" Widodo during the party's national meeting in Semarang.
"She was very surprised with the request but later on she understood," Ahmad said on Saturday as quoted by kompas.com.
Megawati was asked to lead the PDI-P for another five years as she was viewed as the only figure that could unify all the party's factions.
She has held the post of PDI-P chair since 1999.
