The mysterious long tails of white light that shot across the sky yesterday were most likely space debris, Boonraksa Sunthorntham, director of the Chiang Mai-based National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, said.

The strips of light were seen falling diagonally at approximately 10km-per-second speed would unlikely land in Thailand, he added. Such items were possibly space debris - like man-made objects or old satellites - floating in orbit around Earth, he said.

The mysterious light was witnessed early yesterday morning by tourists enjoying the chilly weather on Phitsanulok's Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park as well as those living in nearby provinces. Clips of the light strips also went viral on social media.
