New Taipei city mayor to run for re-election

TAIPEI- New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu yesterday officially confirmed his intention to seek another term as mayor of New Taipei City in a public post on Facebook.

"I will do my best to be re-elected as mayor of New Taipei City," Chu wrote yesterday morning. "I really like my current job, it is busy yet fulfilling." Chu said. The mayor, who has kept local media speculating on his future plans for some time, has confirmed his decision to run again for mayor. The delay in announcing his decision also lead local media to publish political analysis stating that Chu was perhaps waiting for the proper moment before announcing his plans to run for president in 2016.

Chu, who is known for avidly disclosing his political thoughts through social media, stated that the opportunity is not only a responsibility but also a blessing. The mayor wrote that he wishes to provide the citizens of New Taipei with a sense of happiness and that he works with a very effective team that helps to run the city. He said the task is no easier than running an entire country.

When he ran for the first time four years ago, Chu said, he outlined three major projects for his mayoral platform. The projects included a new metro line for the city and the construction of public recreational facilities. All the ideas are not as simple as they sound, Chu said, but he has faith that they will come to fruition.

The mayor also said on his Facebook page that in his years serving the city, he has discovered that there's more he can offer. From including organic vegetables in the lunches of students to the construction of public care centers for the elderly, Chu said that he hopes to bring more warmth into New Taipei City.

Chu also stated that his policies allow for convenience stores to become a safe haven for underprivileged children seeking sources of good nutrition. The policies also allow old communities to find new life through urban renewal, he said.

Using his various holiday celebration programs such as New Taipei Christmasland and the success of local food promotion as examples, Chu further elaborated on his passion for the city. The mayor also said that citizens' opinions are what he values most, and as approval rates for the city government have been on the rise, he believes that it is his administration's duty to continue improving the city.

KMT Taipei Mayoral Candidate Reaction to Re-election Bid

Upon the official confirmation of Chu's plans, Kuomintang mayoral candidate Sean Lien said that he is very excited about Chu's decision. Lien stated that as Taipei City and New Taipei City share a large amount of public services and land together, that he is sure that he and Chu could work together to improve public systems such as the Taipei metro system.

When asked by media if he had known about Chu's decision before the official announcement, Lien has been quoted to say that as he has been busy for his own election as Taipei mayor, he did not know of Chu's re-election bid until yesterday.
