Parents of Thai ex-princess jailed for lese majeste

The parents of Thanphuying Srirasm Suwadi were yesterday handed sentences of two and half years each for lese majeste, which had led to a person being imprisoned on false charges.

The Criminal Court initially sentenced Srirasm's father Aphiruj, 72, and mother Wanthanee Suwadi, 66, each to five-year terms, but later halved the sentences citing their guilty pleas. The verdict is only regarding the lese majeste charge, and does not cover any other charge.

Neither defendant appointed a lawyer to represent them, and pleaded guilty immediately.

Yesterday's verdict resulted from a petition lodged by a woman who was imprisoned for one and a half years in 2003 after pleading guilty to a fraud she had not committed.

The woman filed a petition in February against Aphiruj and Wanthanee.
