MyPoint: Make it safer to hang out laundry

SINGAPORE - There have been too many cases of maids and housewives falling to their deaths while hanging laundry out of HDB kitchen windows.

Hanging out laundry is an everyday task in all housing estates, and the risk of falling remains real and highly probable.

HDB home improvement programmes should therefore give emphasis to the safety of those performing such chores.

The ongoing Home Improvement Programme (HIP) at Block 51, New Upper Changi Road, emphasises enhancing toilets. There is no sign of any work to install safety features for the hanging of clothes.

In Marine Parade, each flat has additional brackets to help support the weight of the heavy bamboo laundry poles.

These may not be the best solution, but they are a safety improvement.

HDB's HIP should improve safety first, to prevent loss of life owing to poor design, rather than enhance toilets.
