Police in Bali heighten security at US Consulate ahead of anti-WTO rally

BALI - At least 200 policemen were deployed on Monday for extra security at the US Consulate in Denpasar, Bali, after it emerged that a rally against the World Trade Organisation (WTO) conference in Nusa Dua would be staged there from Dec. 3 to Dec. 6, the police said.

Denpasar City Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Gusti Kade Budhi Harryarsana said on Monday that the security around the consulate had been stepped up in anticipation of any possible disturbances during the rally opposing the WTO conference.

"We do not want the rally to end in chaos. Therefore, we want to ensure security by deploying hundreds of police personnel at the United States Consulate on Jl. Hayam Wuruk," Gusti said.

According to him, hundreds of protesters from a number of public organisations in Denpasar were planning to participate in the rally.
