Policewoman fights off machete-wielding robber with bare hands

A machete-wielding robber in Guizhou province was stopped by a heroic policewoman, who held him off for five minutes with her bare hands.

According to the website Shanghaiist, auxiliary police officer Cao Yu, 22, was unarmed with she approached the man.

He was carrying a 60-centimetre long, rusty machete, which he had reportedly just used in a nearby robbery.

Cao attempted to ask him why he was carrying the knife, but the man did not reply clearly and attacked her, slashing her hands and neck.

A bystander called the police and within minutes, Cao's colleagues arrived and arrested the man.

Cao was quickly taken to hospital, where she was treated for her wounds.

"I was a little afraid at that time, but I felt it was more important to get the knife away from him," Cao said.

"There were a lot of tourists walking around the square, and I needed to make sure that they were safe."
