Roy Ngerng, Jover Chew: Top S'pore newsmakers in 2014

SINGAPORE - Roy Ngerng, Jover Chew, Yang Yin. Few would have heard of these people just one year ago, but now they have become household names.

The Yahoo Singapore editorial team recently identified the top 10 Singapore newsmakers of 2014, based on its users' interest patterns on what they searched for, read, recommended and shared.

The top local newsmaker this year was former healthcare programme coordinator and blogger Roy Ngerng. He became famous after taking an active role in the #ReturnOurCPF movement. He was also found guilty of defaming Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong over allegations that CPF funds have been misappropriated.

Another controversial figure was Han Hui Hui, who was the fourth top newsmaker this year for her involvement in the CPF movement and her infamous "Wanna Sue Me?" t-shirt.

The second top Singapore newsmaker this year is Jover Chew, the former owner of Sim Lim Square mobile phone shop, Mobile Air. He made headlines in November when his shop refunded a customer over $1,000 in coins, and caused a Vietnamese tourist to kneel on the ground in tears while begging for a refund, which was caught on video.

Chew was subsequently the target of a campaign by Facebook group SMRT (Ltd) Feedback, which exposed his personal details and private photographs online.

Rounding up the top three is Anton Casey, who sparked a furore over two posts on his Facebook page that labelled Singaporeans who take public transport as "poor", and that he could not bear "the stench of public transport".

Other newsmakers in the top 10 include Asian Games swimming gold medalist Joseph Schooling, former tour guide Yang Yin, pastor Lawrence Khong, road bully Quek Zhen Hao, and celebrity couple Joanne Peh and Qi Yuwu.

Yahoo Singapore also listed the Top 10 Most Popular Female and Male Celebrities of the year. The female list included Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence, local star Fann Wong, lawyer Amal Alamuddin who recently married actor George Clooney, and Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.

The male list had Korean stars Lee Min Ho and Kim Soo Hyun in the top two, with actor Robin Williams, who passed away earlier this year, at sixth. While David Beckham did not make the list this year, his son, Brooklyn, was at number seven.
