Seized: Tonnes of ivory worth $8.2m

Thai Customs officers checking confiscated African elephant tusks in Bangkok yesterday.

The Thai authorities seized 511 pieces of smuggled ivory tusks - weighing 3,127kg and worth an estimated 200 million baht (S$8.2 million) - found inside a container on board a cargo ship called the RHL Felicitas, which had been en route to Laos through Bangkok from Kenya, the Thai Customs said.

The Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora has banned the illegal trade in ivory since 1989.
